Club competition for Primrose Angling Club.

Date: 2nd June 2018

Venue:  Rawdah Fishing Vaal dam.

Weather:  Min Max temp:  -2 to 18

Wind: light to no wind.

We arrived at the gate at 06H30 and getting out my Toyota the grass under foot was frozen solid.  Winter is truly upon us as Jack Frost was at work this weekend.  After the payment for gate fees and comp fees number are drawn and then the person who had number 1 left first they have first choice in where they want to sit on the venue. I had the highest number so I set the cars off on their way. Being last in the queue has its advantages and disadvantages all depends on how many anglers are on the venue. This one has 1.5km of water so we are spoiled for choice.  I chose my spot for the day and started to prepare my feed first then set up the stand.

Filling a bucket with dam water for the feed gave me a good idea of how cold the water in the dam is and how soft to make my feed.  Looking at my fishing area i had decided I am going to fish with my 11ft vengeance rods with my 5000 XTA one at 65meters and the other at 75 meters. I set all my equipment up as we are fishing from 08H00 to 16H00 for the day. My start up plan was floats and dough and earth worm and dough.

I loaded my trace with Spitfire float and Almond dough behind my other hook an earth worm and a half garlic white bullet behind it. Dips on the ball was as follows a thin stripe G-Fox next to that a thin stripe of Jinx. My other rod I loaded the same took the Jinx away and changed it to Bass+.

My first pull was 25 minutes and landed a carp the next one followed shortly after. Two fish out in the first half hour and I though this is going to be a very productive day at the water.  Then the equalizer came into play those snags that you are not able to see beneath the water.  I would get a solid pull strike and be hooked up solid. Some time I would get a fish out but most of the time I would lose the fish and get my trace back minus a hook link or two. With the dam water so high the grass was never cut and the small bushes just add to the snags not to mention some of the tree stumps that litter the bank.

I tried to fish at 95 meters with a long waiting time and still had to contend with snags. I found the best distance for the day was 75 meters and 80 meters respectively.  With losing two out of every three fish on the line was a trying day to say the least. However I knew everyone had the same conditions to contend with. The only other change I had made to my hook baits was I swapped to a white garlic float other than that my method stayed the same.

Fishing with a light rod like the vengeance range and being able to put pressure on the fish I tried to get the off the  fish off the bottom as quickly as possible thus increasing my chances of landing the fish. We also had a period in the day with little to no wind and the fish went off the bite, as soon as the light breeze showed up again I started to get some action on the line with the fish picking up the bait on offer.

As the winter takes hold the fishing is going to slow down and patience is going to be the order of the day. I ended the day with 19 fish weighing at 8kg of fish for the day. I had an awesome day at the water being able to be out and in nature is a privilege to behold.

Yes it is cold but dress up and have the gear for the cold conditions. Being part of the angling family and spending time at the water has its own rewards. My advice to you is go out spend the day or weekend at the water it is good for the body and the soul.

Conoflex dips and baits work for me and it will work for you.

Enjoy your next trip to the water and have a Conoflex day.

P.S. Some pictures of my day enjoy.

Second favorite go to dip combo

Most definitely one of my favorite combos are Mystic Spice, Turbo Garlic and Caramel Extreme. This will normally be the combo that I will start of the day at any venue like Bloemhof dam,Vaaldam, Koster dam, Roodekoppies and Olifantsnek dam. You can use redcard floats and garlic floats which combines well with this combo. Ladies and Gents make sure that you have these three Conoflex signature dips in your tackle boxes to catch those extra fish.

Shimano Ultegra Ci 14000 Reel

I was very fortunate to get my hands on the new Shimano Ultegra CI 14000 XT-B reels.   These big pits are considerably more expensive then the XTC and XTD models but are worth every cent once you have had the privilege of fishing with them. They are the truly in a league of their own.

Pieter 1

I do not want to bore you with the technical specs that you can get that from the web and would like to simplify it so we can all relate to it.

Let us start by the weight of the reel which has been reduced by 100g.  This has made the reel extremely well balanced and suitable for almost any make of rod on the carp market currently.  They have by no means sacrificed any strength as the CI4+ is 2,5 times stiffer  than the original CI4 material.

As I am not one for ratios but it is simple to relate to the line retrieved.  For every complete turn of the handle the line retrieved is 103cm (1.03m).  So it is very simple to work out how far every cast is when retrieving the rig to re-bait if you are clipping up or when you fill the spools with line.  Talking about spooling the line, for all the tackle tarts out there they also come with 3 line reduces spools ( sizes 3500, 6000 and 10000).  These reduces eliminates the use of backing line as a filler and seats perfectly around the spool without any slipping.  So you have the option to only fish with +/- 200, 300, 400 or 550m (without reducer) of 0.35mm mono depending on the size of water and what range you fishing.  I use the 0.30 14lb Double  X Extreme abrasion and it fits 600m on comfortably without any spaces and has plenty of space left for a leader.  These spaces are best suited to those using braid and do not like filling up the entire spool with braid when only 250-400m is more than sufficient.

These reels each have an impressive 2 Spare Cold forged Aluminium spools that are all identical and are designed with a patented angled lip which enables the line to leave the spool with a lot less friction that will increase the distance of the cast.  The spools are also tapered to aid with the casting for increased distance and less drag.

When it comes to the line lay it has to be the best I have ever seen in any reel that I have ever used.  Line lay is imperative when it comes to casting as a lot of energy is lost due to this during a cast.  Shimano has achieved this by the super slow Oscillation of the spool compared to the speed that the handle turns per cycle.  They achieved this with an Aero Wrap II worm gear which is considered to be one of the best line lay systems in the world.

Pieter Niemand

One of the most impressive features of the reel is that the front drag that has a bait runner feature incorporated into it.  It allows the drag setting to be switched from a pre-set free spool to a pre-set drag by a simple ¼ turn of the front drag.  It is this function that convinced me to change as I have been fishing with a bait runner since day one and have always shied away from the Ultegra range due to the continuous cranking and loosening before and after every cast to get the tensions right.

Lastly, we have all opened a reel before to try service it and been surprised by the spare parts after ‘fixing it’ and it never being the same again or the complexity of the internal components.   The XT-B has an easy maintenance port that enables direct lubrication to the inner workings of the reel that is really user friendly without any spares lying around.

Please go and have a look at the impressive list of features I have not mentioned in this article on the web as I tried to simplify the very basics for easy reading and have not mentioned MANY other important characteristics that sets this reel apart from the others.

Please note that the above mention views and opinions are based on my own personal experience of using the reels.

Good luck and tight lines to all fishing.

Remember to practice catch and a safe release.

VMC 7136

When it comes to angling one of the most important part of your set up is your hook and one cannot compromise on this part of your equipment. When you compromise on this very important component of your trace you stand a very good chance to loose fish and this could lead to a lot of frustration as well as sub-par performances. It is of the utmost importance to ensure that you select the correct hook, this will make the difference between a very enjoyable outing and a very frustrating outing. That’s why I use the VMC – 7136 hook – Not only is this a Hi-Carbon Steel, but it’s also made of the fine wire to improve your angling experience and performances.

This needle sharpened hook is perfect for your Conventional Angling. The reversed (Offset) front-end almost guarantees a perfect hook-set every time. I would most definitely recommend this to any Conventional Angler out there.

Trans Natal Competition

This weekend I participated in the annual Trans Natal competition. It’s an intense clash between Natal and Gauteng and each respected province get the chance to host this prestige event at their venue of choice.

This year Voortrekkers Jeug Kamp was the battleground.

I started the day as follow;

Short Rod:

  • 75 meters
  • Turbo Garlic
  • Caramel Plus
  • Mystic Spice
  • Single Hard Plain Yellow Float top Hook
  • Single Hard Plain White Float bottom Hook

Deeper Rod:

  • 115 meters
  • Tokkelossie
  • Lodewyk
  • Duiwelsdrek
  • Plain Sweet white dough top hook
  • Single Kariba worm with a dough backing bottom hook

Merely the deeper rod produced one large Grassie of around 8 kg and I felt that it was not viable for me to fish either one of those distances as it was an extremely shallow venue. I then made a decision to start fishing bottom rigs. Around about 10h00 I took both my Shimano Tribal Long Cast 3.5 12ft rods, rigged both with a bottom rig (Vaaldam Rig) with a p6 and on each hook anything  from 5 to 10 Kariba worms.

This would be the way I would end the day, for me, the key to fishing this style was hitting that 120+ line mark each-and-every cast positively and man-o-man was it difficult in strong windy conditions.

I finished the day victor ludorum which gave me a first overall.

My findings for the day were:

It is highly important to get the timing right when you need to change your rods to a certain distance. And when I observed that the bottom of the venue was muddy I made an informed decision to move over to the bottom rig and fish a little deeper.

Get Hooked on this

The new hooks from VMC has hit the SA angling market by storm.I had the privilege to test this awesome hook and wow wow wow was I impressed with this hook.

The model I tested was the vmc 7136 number 8.We as anglers always strive for a hook that stays sharper for longer, is stronger, is lighter than any other hooks and well what more do you want, well look no further people because the VMC 7136 has all of that points ticked.

I was so impressed and I used one hook for the whole day and when i caught the last fish for the day the hook was still as sharp like when i took it out of the packet. That is amazing in its own way.

The way the hook penetrated the carp and mudfish in the mouth was amazing and i had not one hook pull and not one open bend hooks for the day.I even at one stage pulled the fish so hard to see what happened and yes no problems at all.

I was impressed and can recommend the VMC hook range for any angler from social to the competitive anglers.

Go and get your VMC hooks today and you will be hooked for life.

Tight lines and happy hooking that big one

Rapala Sunblock

SPF 50 Spray

Portability – Cap Small Odourless.

Ease of use. Spray

Why should you use it.

There are many must haves in a fishermen’s list, but unless you are immune to skin cancer or don’t mind looking a 100 when you are only 35 years young, sunblock is a definite must have! Today I will go through some of the considerations when selecting a good sunblock and explain why I think the Rapala SPF 50+ spray is a must have.

Firstly to me it’s about how you go about applying the sunblock. I have seen a few anglers with “white” faces arriving at comps already protected for the day. This is probably because they want to wash their hands before leaving home to make sure the fish don’t “detect” the scent. Whether or not sunblock on hands effect the fish may be up for discussion. Despite the final say on this, a spray application might be the better option either way.  The dispensing medium of this product needs no hand / finger contact other than pressing the button to release a spray of protection on intended area of skin.

As many of us may not be aware, sunblock needs to be applied more than once a day. The frequency may depend on the SPF level but even SPF 50 needs to be applied at least 2 to 3 times a day.  Again the spray is handy to apply where needed without needing to use hands.

In most cases the container is also a key factor. As the Rapala sunblock comes in a can it cannot lose its contents if placed at the bottom of a heavy bag while travelling. The cap it comes with is small and fits tightly. This prevents the cap from dislodging and accidentally dispensing the contents while travelling.

The last key consideration is the effect a sunblock has when seeping into one’s eyes at the end of the day. This dreaded “end of the day eye burn” is caused when perspiration and sunblock seeps into one’s eyes and causes significant discomfort.  I found that this product is far less likely to cause this as it is non greasy and is also water resistant. I have sprayed it on my face area and had far less eye burn at the end of the day.

In summary, this is an awesome product at a very reasonable price.

Dames SA Kampioenskappe 2016

Stroppe is natuurlik heel bo aan my lys.

Jy sien net voerballe trek.
bal gedruk. My kombinasie: Black Magic en Tjop Tjop. Ek land so elke 20 min ‘n karp. Bo lekker groot soet wit deeg.

Prysuitdeling Funksie

My dip Kombinasies is Spitfire, Caramel Plus en Krismis.
